Not necessarily rewriting it, no. I just like the purple armor better, because it's more distinct and fits better with the H:R style of Sangheili combat harnesses.

A reasonable explanation would be to say the purple armor is the dress uniform afforded to Thel's rank as Supreme Commander, while the gold armor is a more practical combat harness. Knowing that he would face an inquisition, Thel went into the council chamber dressed for battle, to make a statement.
