Meh. It was also touched upon in The Cole Protocol.

The Cortana Letters, The Cole Protocol, Contact Harvest, and "The Return" all made it clear that the Elites were beginning to doubt that the Humans were all that bad. It WAS their tradition to defeat enemies and absorb the ones that fought well into their ranks, and Humanity WAS fighting well.

Go through this forum and look for the explanations we've come up with for the stuff in Halo. They're all pulled out of thin air, and they usually work.
