In Response To: Re: “Why I Hate Halo” — Eurogamer (kapowaz) : The article is an opinion piece, and is labelled as such right at the start. : How does it follow that he's ‘passing off subjectivity as objectivity’? Whoops, I should have made this clearer... : Here we go again "it's a good story but it's not exactly
...I was talking about the arrogant attitudes in the comments section (not the article itself, which I largely actually agree with) some of which basically amount to "I think it's overrated and here are some facts to prove it: -it's not Culture -it's not Enders Game -it's not Brave New World -it's not..." As my post says, I have no problem with people saying Halo's story is rubbish and/or poorly told. In some ways it is! I only despise some the attempts to imply there is some greater factual grounding to justify disliking Halo. There's not. You have opinions and preferences and Halo doesn't meet those. That's fine. Hate it if you want. But don't insult my intelligence by trying to tell me my opinions are objectively wrong. That's not to say I dislike the use of facts in opinionated discussion or anything. Facts are great. We need *more* facts in our discourse. I'm saying we need less of these "false truths"; opinions dressed as facts. Less of these attempts to imply x/y/z person is a bit stupid for not sharing a/b/c's preferences. It's just a matter of presentation. I don't like it when people call each other immature or childish for liking different things. That's really all there is to it. The article wasn't like that; only a select few comments, and even they weren't the sort of virulent strain you'd find on a Half-Life discussion board, to name a particularly violent case study. I'm a bit cranky lately and it's leaving my posts a lot sloppier than usual. Apologies for not making it clear the first time.
