Holding Lord Hood to account, one acre at a time. | |

In Response To: SINCE NO ONE ELSE IS ANSWERING HIM (Riceatron) : I say they were presented pretty well, especcially in Halo 3. Halo has a : thing about TELLING not showing, and they told us that Halfjaw's ships had : to glass half of Africa just to contain a single cruiser of Flood. Ahhh yes! I've been meaning to return to that little issue! Those remarks have been held in contention for quite some time now, but thanks to Halo: Reach, we've finally got some solid figures to work with. Let's start from the top. Halo: Reach states that it would take a single CCS-class battlecruiser 15 seconds to glass 1 acre. Let's go from there. Area of Africa: >30000000km^2
Total time required for 1 ship firing continuously to glass 1 acre: 15 seconds Total time required for 1 ship firing continuously to glass half of Africa: 55598710830 seconds/926645180.5 minutes/15444086.342 hours/1763.023555 years.
Clearly, these figures are massive; *too* massive. For obvious reasons, no more than a day can reasonably pass between contamination and containment, so let's focus in on a 24 hours timeframe. Total ships required to glass half of Africa within 24 hours: 650000. Six-hundred-and-fifty-thousand Covenant Battlecruisers double-glazing Africa? We all know Half-Jaw is a bit of a party animal but crowds like that are just unmanageable. I don't see the need to drag this out any further when the conclusion we're after can safely be drawn from here: Lord Hood was exaggerating on a massive scale. Half-Jaw's ships did not glass "half a continent" - they did not glass half of that, or even half of that; the numbers simply do not allow for it. Yes, I know a quite a lot of you have believed for some time that he was merely talking up his losses in a spur-of-the-moment rage (quite reasonable, although the scale of his exaggeration is quite ridiculous), but now we can finally put some facts behind this assumption. Now, we can end it there if you want, but I'd like to take it further. I'd like to see just what percentage of Africa Half-Jaw's fleet could have plausibly glassed in under 24 hours. To do this, we need to make a few assumptions.
Let's do the maths again. Total time required for 1 ship firing continuously to glass New Mombasa (15*74000/time required to glass 1 acre*number of acres being glassed): 1110000 seconds/308 hours.
Don't get ahead of yourself, Half-Jaw. One city does not half a continent make. But it's a good start, so let's see if you can chew what Lord Hood says you're biting off. Total area of Kenya: 55351605ac
Well, I think that seals it, really. To effectively sterilise Kenya, Half-Jaw would need a thousand battlecruisers. Not a chance in heck he'd be able to tackle even an eighth of a continent. There is one final possibility. The Committee were wrong. I mean, they'd have to be a few exponents wrong, but it's theoretically possible. I hate how glassing has been nerfed, but I'm not going to land myself in another argument over it.
