: Good points and discussion, but I wanted to come back to the parts snipped
: above.
: I would say that with excellent actors and good direction, one should be able
: to expect very good posing/timing/expression from mocap. However (as far
: as I'm aware), there is still a significant limitation on how many points
: can be simultaneously tracked for mocap -- so I can imagine even the best
: raw mocap work does look a bit... well, raw -- so post-work/manual tweaks
: from an animator are certainly still necessary.
: But I think mocap of a talented actor with good, clear direction could quite
: clearly and effectively communicate the Miranda or Chief scenes you
: referenced.

And that's probably true of realistic style animation. You probably could get an actor to get the poses and timing you want, but, like you said, an animator still has to clean it up and push the poses or it still looks icky. Now, I've never worked with mocap data before but everyone I know who has has described it as having to clean up animation from the worst junior animator in the world. It takes a lot of time and work to clean that up. And you'd probably get a better result if you had the animator start from scratch. Mocap itself is expensive, and, unless you're doing something like integrating with live action, it just isn't worth it. If the animator directs the actor into doing the poses and timing just how he wants, it still has to be cleaned up regardless.

I hope this made sense :P
