(SoundEffect)) : I haven't seen this come up yet, and I can't see any way this is spoiler : material, but it was of interest to me. : There's some foreign (to North Americans) text at the end of the entry for : November 7, 2549. I contacted a colleague (and great friend, Seeraj) in : India about the text. I sent her a pic of the text from the book and asked : is she recognized it. She first thought it was Hindi writing, but soon : found it to be written in Sanskrit. She identified the characters involved : and then provided a translation for a passage it belongs in. I don't know : exactly what it means or it's significance to the Journal, but I had to : know what it was for myself. I'll paste the email we shared below: Sent: : Thursday, October 07, 2010 10:45 AM : To: Loftus, Stephen : Subject: RE: Halo foreign (to me) text : Hi Stephen, : The text in image is read as “ dhurEdhrusam gruhapathim aTaryum ”. It is in : Sanskrit language. It is taken from one of the phrases from Rig Veda which : is an ancient Indian sacred text of Hinduism religion: " Agnim narO : didhitibhir araNyOr : hastacyuthi janayantha prasastham I : dhurEdhrusam gruhapathim aTaryum II " : (Meaning): "As the fire priests with (their) fingers produce fire from : two sticks by the (deft) motion of their hands, in the same way with the : coordinated efforts of their deep thinking and noble actions, WISE MEN : manifest and extend the glory of the effulgent Lord, who is excellent, and : to be realized at depth with subtle eyes, ever vigilant and sovereign Lord : of Creation. " : Regards, : Seeraj : And thank you so much, Seeraj!!! :) : My own interpretation of this is a comparison of how like two sticks can be : struck, hit together or rubbed, but the fire priests and their skilled, : 'deft motion of their hands' produces fire. This would seem to be creating : something extraordinary out of something ordinary. They are comparing this : ability to that of a lord, creating something great out of something : mundane. : Could this be Halsey referring to creating Cortana from a clone of her brain? : Something extraordinary (an artificially intelligent being from signals : sent through a chunk of gray matter? Wow. Just wow. I didn't even think twice about that. Given when it was written, it would make sense that it's related to Cortana's creation. She cloned herself (more importantly her brain and managed to transfer memories to it) and then created a highly sophisticated AI from that. (My brain's not working so if any of that is incorrect please forgive me.)
