"Lone Wolf." *HUGE SPOILERS!*
Posted By: NobleSixActual <noblesixactual@gmail.com>Date: 9/16/10 5:22 a.m.

WARNING: I INCLUDE A MAJOR SPOILER FROM HALSEY'S JOURNAL IN THIS POST. IF THAT BOTHERS YOU, BE CAREFUL TOWARDS THE BOTTOM.

Okay. So Jun is tasked with escorting Dr. Halsey to CASTLE Base. Which is located under the Menachite Mountain range. At the end of the game, Emile and Noble Six arrive at the shipbreaking yard in Azod, and get Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn. It leaves, and Noble Six stays behind to finish the job.

After the credits, Noble Six is no longer in the shipyard. He's on a platform, near a mountain, with a large pipeline running to it. In the distance is a mountain with a huge cut lasered in the peak of it, but stopped. The Covenant don't entirely glass Reach, initially, because they discover Forerunner artifacts under the surface. The menu background for "Lone Wolf" shows a swath of the planet being bombarded, but the mountain in the background is standing.

"The Office of Naval Intelligence believes deployment of a Spartan team is a gross mis-allocation of valuable resources. I disagree."

Also, in this abandoned area, where Noble Six fights for his life, are Spartans. *Seven* dead Spartans. I've counted it twice, and I am loading it on different difficulties and running around, but it seems like there are only seven random bodies loaded in with random armor configurations. Pretty fitting, for Bungie's favorite number.

"Spartans never die, Jorge. they're just missing in action."

What if Colonel Holland sent these Spartans out to protect CASTLE at any cost? He clearly doesn't mind deploying them. As of Ghosts of Onyx, Alpha Company is dead. Beta Company has three surviving members: Tom, Lucy, and SPARTAN-B312; Noble Six. There are no Charlie through Foxtrot Companies, that we know of. Gamma Company has 330 members, fifteen of which are on Onyx during the events of the novel - seven die, five are frozen in Forerunner cryo pods (the event at Zone 67) and three are alive with the remaining two Beta Company members, the remaining SPARTAN-IIs (Fred, Linda, Kelly), CPO Mendez and Dr. Halsey.

That leaves three hundred and fifteen SPARTAN-IIIs alive in the Halo universe, as of the end of Halo 3. And Gamma Company was formed in 2543, so they fit in the canon perfectly.

What if that mountain is Menachite? What if Noble Six is on his way, on foot, to find Jun, the only Spartan left alive (that he knows of) on Reach? It's all he really could do, after losing everyone else on the way to Halsey and Keyes. And what about these other Spartans?

I know Bungie was hard on the novels before, but all of this stuff adds up, to me. They really used Reach as a love letter to the fans, and acknowledge the books in a big way by finally showing us Halsey, bringing Keyes back in (and if the reprint is any indication, his appearance doesn't retcon The Fall of Reach at all), giving us a badass cast of SPARTAN-IIIs (and the baddest -II of all since the Chief himself!), and pouring detail over every last bit of the game. I think they realized that their hardcore fans really wanted some of the stuff they've read to spill over, and they finally let it.

*SPOLIER FOR THE JOURNAL STARTS HERE*

Not to mention every thing in Halsey's journal. My God. Halsey is Miranda's mother? She froze all the washouts from the SPARTAN-II program in the hopes of bringing them back to 100% someday and, later, has inklings of the technology to do it? The design of the MJOLNIR armor? It's got SO much good shit in it.

What do you guys think about those Spartans? Random? Wink and nod? Hook for the rest of the franchise?
