I agree that the ending scene felt a bit forced; the player survived worse encounters throughout the game, yet this is where he dies. He dies because the dramatic ending demands it, even in a situation he could've easily survived otherwise. I think the final battle should've been more epic; instead of a few elites and grunts, it should've had a massive army that would literally overwhelm the player. The scenario itself wasn't that dramatic at all; the setting of the previous mission, with rain, thunder and ships glassing the landscape around you, would've made a more epic final stand.
