: Speculation? There usually isn't a ship of the same name while one is in service, though after a ship is destroyed or decommissioned, it's fair game for the Admiralty to name another ship with the same namesake. i.e. the USS Yorktown (CV-5) was built in 1937 and sunk at Midway in 1942, then in 1943, the USS Yorktown (CV-10) was commissioned and served throught World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
