In Response To: Halo Evolutions (Ragashingo) : The only story I didn't like as much was Tobias S. Buckell's Dirt. The story : itself was fine. It spanned pretty much the entire Covenant War and was : actually pretty good, I just felt it was a bit long and that in : "reality" the young ODST would have never listened to what must : have been a two hour tale, no matter how well the dying soldier might have : been telling it. I've already seen at least one person say they liked it : best, so maybe it was just me. That's kind of an old storytelling technique I've seen used in tons of stories, so I didn't even notice it. It's just an artistic way of presenting a story with a specific speaker to a specific audience in a specific situation, as opposed to a more usual, straight-forward approach from an omniscient narrator. The story being told by a dying soldier to a comrade who knows shares his military life - that helps define the meta story and how its told. So I'm personally totally cool with that method, and I think it fits well with his almost-lyrical writing style. :) And yeah, Evolutions is great! I started in a thread a day or two ago sharing my impressions of the first few stories, if you're interested. I'll be back to discuss more when I finish the thing.
