The construction of a Halo bit which isn't just similar to Earth, its actually an accurate viewing of the whole of Eurasia. That was a bit of a double-taker. Completely irrelevant (and lazy, lol) demonstration image, or something critical. : There used to be a story in the early days of Star Trek (mid 60's) that on : the first pilot episode, the set dressers were outfitting a stage as an : alien world. They had some fake rocks and trees and plants and a few real : trees and plants around. Gene Roddenberry (Trek's creator) was viewing the : set and complained that the world didn't look 'alien' enough. The set : dressers sarcastically asked what an alien plant would look like. Gene : walked over to one of the real plants, pulled it out of the ground, turned : it over and shoved it back in the ground burying the leaves and flowers : and having the ugly roots showing above ground. He then exclaimed that : that was what an alien plant looked like. : I've always liked that story. : You can make a world look wholly unfamiliar even using familiar things. Certainly very true, though by the same token, alien is a really funny term for us to use. We very commonly refer to the deep sea as being a domain so different and detached from our own that its alien. Same for the creatures that live down there. Cue the old line that we know more about space than we do about the deepest depths of the sea, etc. But the thought I keep having is that its also possible to try too hard to make something alien. In a way, when it is actually so very familiar... disturbingly so even, It raises its own very interesting questions and maybe that's what they were going for. Hmm, I was going to say it might even be original to take that step, though then I remembered Stargate which is pretty much all about that.
