I can't seem to help but think you're basing this on E.T. and that wasn't supposed to be sci-fi movie so much as a movie about freindship and acceptance and perseverance and all kinds of other sappy things. Now that I think about it, you could mean A.I. I haven't seen it so I don't feel comfortable with commenting on it but my impression from what I heard is that it also was not supposed to be about the sci-fi, just using it as a vehicle of sorts.
