It's definitely the tether

In Response To: Here's the thing... *IMG* (MasterNoob) You can tell the big black spot is the tether not only from context (same footprint, in the city center, geography of the city altered to accommodate it -- circular roads, ports, etc.), but because it matches up with what's seen in the game: As you can see, the same streets and parks you find on at the end of Metropolis match up with part of the map. And if you follow the path of the level all the way to the end, where the Scarab stops at the end of the small canal, you can see the black spot is in the same location as the space elevator is in the game: directly across the larger canal, behind some buildings. The mini-Mombasa seen in the main menu and the Outskirts/Metropolis cinematics doesn't exactly match the above map, but that's forgivable since it's a simplified version only seen for a few seconds. And even then, the simplified version roughly matches the map: (Taken in a Halo 2 modeling program; the blue areas are land, the brown is water) In this image, Old Mombasa is in the lower-left corner; the bridge connects it to New Mombasa in the center (the part you fight in); this area is next to a large canal, with the space elevator on the far side.
