The desperation was subtle, but there
Posted By: Jordan117Date: 5/31/09 12:41 a.m.

In Response To: Some comments. (Gravemind)

: "Earth City" vs. "Outskirts/Metropolis"

: One of my main beefs with how things turned on in the final game versus what
: we saw in the E3 demo isn't the stage design in and of itself. Rather, my
: opinion, which is shared by The BS Police, is that the difference in tone
: is the major problem. In the build up to Halo 2, we were told that
: "Earth will never be the same." In the announce trailer, Earth's
: surface was covered with nuclear explosions. The whole world was on fire.
: Earth City reinforced this sense of desperation. New Mombasa was under
: seige. After evading anti-air fire, the Chief's Pelican lands near a
: triage unit. The Marines were caught in large-scale urban combat with
: Covenant ground forces. The Covies had numerous troops, vehicles, and a
: giant plasma mortar shelling the hell out of the Marines. You really got
: the sense that Earth was well and truly boned.

: Halo 2 as it actually is is far less impressive in terms of overall tone.
: There is no sense of desperation. It doesn't feel like Earth is in danger.
: Of course, Earth wasn't even attacked in a full-scale invasion, and only
: Regret's ship landed on Earth. Even then, it didn't even feel like New
: Mombasa was in danger. There's the Chief, a few scattered groups of
: Marines, and a relatively small Covenant occupation force that apparently
: didn't bother causing large-scale carnage. It's like we went from
: "Earth will never be the same" to "These bland beige
: alleyways will never be the same." Of course, Halo 3 isn't any better
: in this regard, despite the end of Halo 2 finally showing off some of what
: was hinted at in the H2 announce trailer. Instead of a battle depicting
: humanity's last stand, the Chief spends the first third of the game
: dicking around in the wilderness and helping a couple of Pelicans out of
: an old base. The only part of human civilization he happens across is a
: single factory. If you played the game without knowing anything about
: Halo, you'd probably have no clue that the Earth was completely overrun.

The problem in Halo 2 was that mid-stream development changes bumped the "It's the goddamned apocalypse"-scale invasion from the beginning of the game (Cairo Station) to the end of it ("Sir, finishing this fight"). You can read some more about my theory here:

http://forums.bungie.org/halo/archive25.pl?read=725324

I think this idea was (subtly) vindicated by what we saw in Halo 3 and related media. A rundown:

- The action's not just in Africa -- in Ghosts of Onyx, the Covenant are said to have touched down in Cuba, Antarctica, and off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula; in Uprising they attack Cleveland.
- In the first Uprising comic one of the characters hints that the Covenant glassed Australia
- The Beastiarum lists Earth's population as "600 million (sudden change)", implying that at least several hundred million were killed during the invasion
- This is corroborated by what Miranda Keyes said during the intro to Crow's Nest: "Terrestrial casualties from the subsequent bombardment were... extreme"
- Also, Frankie, in the campaign vidoc, says: "The Covenant has absolutely destroyed parts of Earth, millions of people have died."
- This sign implies that the Covenant are leveling entire cities.
