In Response To: Where I got Chief/Cortana = Didact/Librarian (SonofMacPhisto)
: That's the one!
: The Terminal story of Librarian and Didact always reminded me of something
: from Lord of the Rings. You know the love story between Aragorn and Arwen?
: Well, it's unique because it's between between a Numenorian (half-elf
: human) and an elf. Apparently, in Middle Earth this is a Big Deal - them
: coming together is a sort of omen for prosperity and a strong line of
: noble, righteous kings. Which is of course what happens with Sauron get's
: his... uh... 'eye' handed to him. :)
: What's interesting is that it's the second time this Big Deal has happened.
: In the Silmarillion, there is a story called 'Beren and Luthien' that is
: about lovers of the same sort. So, in that universe Aragorn and Arwen are
: a fulfillment of the promise started with Beren and Luthien. I hope that
: makes sense, without going into too much detail.
: The Terminals have always made me think of Cortana and Chief, the Librarian
: and Didact in the same way. Like Aragorn and Arwen, Chief and Cortana are
: different from each other in a similar sort of way. Instead of elvish,
: Cortana is technological. Instead of Numenorian, Chief is a cyborg. Them
: coming together served as a positive omen to the rest of the galaxy in a
: moment of crisis - and whether you like it or not there is some sort of
: emotional connection.
: I think the Librarian and Didact story was meant to give more weight to the
: relationship between Chief and Cortana - two loves coming together in a
: moment of apocalyptic crisis. It's easy for me to imagine this, because
: both characters in the Terminals remind me SO MUCH of Chief and Cortana,
: albeit much older and longer in experience. Don't their words and actions
: remind you of Chief and Cortana? Librarian is out collecting species,
: executing the Index project. Meanwhile, Didact is inside the Maginot
: Sphere, prosecuting the war against the Flood and preparing the final
: solution. To me, that just SOUNDS LIKE what they would do in that
: situation, in those roles.
: In another way, this is one of the few ways 343 Guilty Spark's relatively
: extreme familiarity with the Master Chief in Halo 1 makes sense. So when
: our friend brought up time travel, that's when this all came together and
: I figured why couldn't Chief and Cortana BE Didact and Librarian? As
: Mendicant Bias was leading Chief through the Ark and Installation 04a,
: could the Terminals and their story been a way of preparing Chief for the
: greater deeds to come? I've always thought of the Chief wondering to
: himself, 'Why am I reading this? Here? Now? What is the purpose, and why
: can't I draw myself away from it?' Finally, regarding the romance between
: Chief and Cortana: if the Forerunners were able to solve Cortana's future
: rampancy, give her a physical manifestation, AND she looked like she does
: in the games, don't you think Chief might start looking at her just a
: LITTLE bit differently?
: In the end, considering what they would have to do and sacrifice in the
: original Forerunner-Flood War, it's a twist with excellent potential.
I remember when I first presented the idea of the Chief and Cortana going back in time, and you (or someone else) made the connection between Chief/Cortana and Librarian/Didact, I was a bit sceptical. However, after reading your ideas on it in this thread, I really also believe its a really good idea and would make an very interesting story.
The only thing that still makes me a BIT sceptical about the whole idea is that Guilty Spark calls the chief "reclaimer". Why wouldn't he call him Didact instead? If they can give a reasonable explanation for that in the next book, game, etc. then I would be very pleased with the story being continued in this way.
