In Response To: Seems to me... (stan)

: That the real downside is the fact that you have to transfer anything at all.
: I don't doubt that it's not difficult to transfer videos from the dvds to
: the pc, but the whole process just adds extra steps that aren't necessary
: with a capture card. Like I said, the capture card is more flexible.

: I'm definitely getting a capture card in July. I've already got a few
: machinima shorts written up and ready to shoot. Should be fun.

Depends how it balances out. The extra steps aren't exactly complicated or time consuming and don't require exceptionally good PC specs (which is inherent also since the resolution is lower).

In my case, since my PC and 360 are in separate rooms but there is a DVD Recorder in both those rooms, you can imagine which is by far more convenient. No swapping cables, no moving a console around, no venturing into the cable hell that is the behind of a PC
That easily makes up for the extra technical steps.

The card is more flexible, but it is generally a lot more expensive and has its own downfalls unless you plan to have a console permanently hooked up to it.
