: Yeah. You gain the ability to edit on a PC. So anything that can be done with
: the DVD recorder can be done better with a capture card, assuming the
: card's not lacking any inputs present on the DVD recorder and your
: computer has a DVD burner.

: The system requirements for the card might still be a factor though -
: depending on what you want to do with the footage and whether it needs to
: be edited, it may not be worth it to invest in upgrading your computer (if
: you'd need to at all - maybe yours is already ok).

Its not that hard to get video from a DVD recorder to PC.

Nero is perfectly capable of doing it.
You can drag/drop the VOD files from the DVD you made, then if you import them into Nero, it will convert them into very nice MPEG files that can be easily edited in even basic Windows Movie Maker. Doesn't take very long to do either.

Most video editing software, such as Sony Vegas, also has a facility to directly import video from home-made DVDs.

The downside is lack of HD (though largely irrelevant unless you have somewhere to store HD movies. Most will rely on Youtube and similar sites and there, you're not even getting DVD quality, so recording in HD for youtube purposes is complete overkill and a waste of rendering time)

A further downside to PAL users is that most PAL DVD Recorders will not record 60hz.
That rules Halo 3 out since the game was, somewhat unusually, not given a 50hz option.
