Ok, I think I may have figured this out. I got to work this way:

Right before the chief jumps out of pelican at the beginning of the Ark, I paused the game. I then quickly depressed the right thumb stick multiple times up and down. (This was a very rapid press and release of the right thumb stick.) During this, I noticed that the interior of the ship appeared for a brief fraction of a second but the camera would not stop within the ship on its own. If you don't do this fast enough you won't see the interior of the ship. To get the camera to stop within the ship, I pressed the Y button to detach the camera during the fraction of a second it was displayed. I was then free to fly around and explore.
