Another possibility - they wanted to get out of there. Its easier to replace the driver if he gets shot when you're in the passenger seat than when you're in the gunner's seat. Another, equally important reason is that the Warthog's gunner position doesn't have much in the way of handholds, belts, or other safety features, which means that, with the way they're driving in the short, the actors stand a very good chance of being hurled away from the gunner's spot, which is going to be very painful :P
