What art goes on the covers and spine is up to the publisher, who hires an artist, and then another person works the art in such a way that it looks good with the title and author's name and so on. Some authors do get cover art approval (I'm not one of them, I don't have anything like that kind of influence with Penguin) but even if I had, I wouldn't have known whether to question the gun because I don't know HALO from hello. As far as I was concerned it was just a cool-looking gun, and since the hero of the story does have a circa 2022 military firearm I thought it fit. I did complain about the model, because he looks nothing like the hero as described in the book (for the record half Sioux, other half Anglo with a smattering of Asian, bronze-skinned with straight jet-black hair tied tight at the back, plus he's missing a prominent scar). The publisher left the art as it was. I'm not an artist, not a digital rights lawyer, and not the publisher, so I really don't know what to say about all this. I'll be happy to take responsibility for the shoddy language, over-the-top violence, and tawdry sexual exploitation in the novel itself, but please don't look to me for any answers about the cover beyond what I've written here.
