The primary reason I thought that the page should have a backend that was closer to the MPRRS/MCD style than the Story page style was time. The Story Page is sporadically updated - but it receives submissions every single day. (We're not even talking about the relevant material that's posted on the forum here.) There are three editors for the page; all three are rather busy in real life. When they find time, they sift through the submissions to the Story page - but they've got to deal with spam, and many years of existing material; deciding what's actually new takes time and work - so it's slow going. If a submission page existed which required verifiable references and personal identification WITH THE SUBMISSION, then editing becomes MUCH easier; the editor simply needs to confirm the reference, do a quick search to ensure the info hasn't already been posted, and hit 'Approved'. Content will get from the submitters to the public MUCH more quickly than it does for the Story page. (I'm not for a second criticizing the job the Story Page guys do - the info they collect, and sift, and process is MUCH more nebulous than a 'science page' collection would be, and REQUIRES more editor input than the Science Page will need. I'm just saying that the needs for a new site are quite different.) Disclaimer: This is a page which has been suggested by a group of fans. This will be, in the end, a page BUILT by a group of fans. If this group sees a different way to lay the page out than I do - go for it. As long as it makes sense in the end, I'm fine with hosting it. I was just providing some input based on a few years of doing this sort of thing - but that doesn't make my way the only way. The OTHER problem with the story page layout is that it's built in a language I'm moving away from; I'm not willing to duplicate it for a new site, because I no longer want to support this language. I haven't undertaken the (somewhat daunting) task of rewriting the code in php yet - so there's no useful code to cannibalize from there at this point. That doesn't mean someone can't write something that's FUNCTIONALLY equivalent, if you believe it's a better format for this data - it simply means that "just duplicate the story directory, change the database pointers, and we're set to go" isn't a valid route for this page. | |
