I honestly can see no way of keeping him in the armour : for the duration of the film without it becoming a crutch to the movie. : Many have said it; there just isn’t enough emotional scope with a face : plate. Now in certain circumstances it is possible to use other cinematic : devices to almost piece emotion together: combining music, framing, : editing, the direction of other characters can be combined so as to create : the emotion in the mind of the audience and indeed the blankness of the : face plate may add to this sometimes. However, for a significant amount of : time this just wont be possible. When I was seventeen I did a project and : school where I showed people an episode of RvB. They liked it, but almost : everyone said “Hated the Power Ranger-type head nodding.” Now, Halo isn’t : the Power Rangers, but the fact that that link has been made is surely : terrifying enough to get the point across. there is one cutscene which, above all else, has convinced me that if done correctly, acting can be achieved through a visor. it was only one scene, and the gesture was nary 5 seconds, but i connected with the chief on a human level after seeing it. it is from my favorite cutscene, the final cinematic of halo 1, right after you see the explosion and you hear the chief say, "did any one else make it?" and then bows his head down and slowly shakes it. that showed me that he was a deep character, that he felt to, and that he cared not just about the human race as a whole, but for each individual who died. together with the music, the scene was a very short but powerful one, and was enough to leave a mark on my impression of him. i am sure that only one or two scenes like this in the movie could really make an impact, and allow us to "fill in the blanks", such as his thoughts and how he would emote them if we could see his face. one of the greatest things is how cold steve downes voice seems, but then you see that the chief has real feelings, and just getting to see that little gesticulation and almost sad tone of voice makes the story real. those are just my opinions on the subject, and if these small showings of humanity are done more than a couple times in the movie they will lose most of their meaning. yes, mc is a killing machine, but not because he wants to be one.
