(Michael M.) : I'm sure you've heard the many stories of what fans can do to make a : difference: Maddox and Orbitz, Penny Arcade and Jack Thompson, and even : Bungie's Fight the Flood Campaign. Although I believe that the fans, if outspoken enough, can change the outcome of their obsession, you're examples here serve no purpose towards your arguement. In the cases of 'Maddox and Orbitz' and 'Penny Arcade and Jack Thompson' the fans did produce massive responses to the situation, but neither response was large enough to actually affect the problem. Bungie's Fight the Flood Campaign was a fundraising event, and merely proved what lots of us already knew, Bungie has a huge community willing to help those in need, like the flood victims, or the Leyks, or anyone else who might need it. The question then becomes, is the fanbase large enough to cause a difference? Can we cause a large enough splash in the ocean of Hollywood that a big shark like Jackson will notice? Luckily Bungie scored a producer like Jackson, one known to take interaction from the fans seriously, but he is relatively new in the directing world, and one cannot predict how much hands on time he will commit to Halo: The Motion Picture. Although this is a big fanbase, it might nt be big enough to change any actual story already written, and if Garland wrote that the helmet is to be removed, it might stay that way. If the director could do it in a way that was tasteful, and a actor of excellent caliber was chosen, it could work. My one arguement to why I wouldn't want to see the mask removed is similar to that of King's when he talks about why he doesn't want the Dark Tower series made into a movie. When you read a story (or in this case play Halo), you are given the way the characters interact with each other, and a basic description of them, but your imagination fills in the rest, and you are able to connect more with the character, because you have synthesized them into your own creation. If you were to give this character a face in a movie, it would shatter that synthesis, and any time you played the game or read the book, you would be left with the afterimage of whichever actor was chosen to play that character. I'm split down the middle... I want the mask taken off, because I know it can be done right, but I want the mask left on because I don't believe it will be done right.
