Usually, when a product is advertised, it is aimed at the don't knows.
There's no point pitching it at people who would never use it - because they'll never use it. There's no point pitching it at people who will buy it
anyway - they'll buy it anyway. Your biggest opportunity is the people who aren't really sure but are open to persuasion.

There are grizillions of Halo fans who will go to see this film anyway. Now, whilst you don't want to piss 'em off, there are a lot more casual cinema goers who maybe don't know about Halo. What's gonna attract 'em? "Hey babe, how about we catch the new Tim Dadabo movie this weekend?"

There has been a FRIGHTENING amount of money poured into this already. That means a lot of interested parties. That means a lot of opinions (not unlike this very thread - except behind each rant is a job and a profit margin that could depend on how the post is received).

Far as I'm concerned, the movie is being given every chance. Good people are involved, bungie is being consulted, there's no shortage of cash.

BUT

Lots of things have to change. Some for good reason, some for questionable reasons and some just because that's the way it is.

The story HAS to change. Because a lot of it is piffle. Remember, this was a game - some of the storytelling is there to facilitate gameplay (fight your way there, uh, fight your way back again - blow up the ship, but first, blow up three generators etc). Why do films often change from books/comics/real life? Because film is DIFFERENT to books/comics/the truth. And to video games. Halo: The Flood, even with extra back story, more marine/covenant sections was a reasonably faithful translation of the Halo story. Wasn't great, was it?

Casting. Names can attract people to see films. Yes, Darth Vader worked. But he wasn't on the screen as the lead character all the time. The helmet thing is tricky. Cinematically, it allows for very little conveyance of emotion. You either need to really big up the characters around the Chief or lessen his part. I'd guess that whether big name or bright new talent, that helmet is coming off.That's not to say it's unthinkable that one or two of the voice actors might just sneak a part here or there. I'd say it was more likely that the existing performances will become a loose casting brief, but that will depend on how the characters have been re-interpreted by the writer/director.

Script Writer. Director. Editor. Casting Director.
These people get paid a lot of money for their experience, their input and what they can add to a project. Their interpretation. They are NOT going to do it 'like in the game' - otherwise what's the point of paying them a load of money? Sure, there have been 'getting it from page to screen' exercises aplenty recently - Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, even History of Violence. Halo has a slightly different problem in that it wasn't written as a story, it was written as a game. Plenty of good elements, and ending that would be difficult to surpass - but a lot of mush in between. A lot of work needs doing by a lot of people to beat it into a something that will hold the paying punter's attention on screen for two hours.

This film is not a video game.
It will be different in many ways.
Hopefully, it will still be very good. But in its own right. And certainly not in its fidelity to the source material.
