Banshee division tactics

: It's been my contention as well that more than two 'shees working together
: tend to get in each other's way and be generally cumbersome, but I may be
: wrong; I'd welcome input from anybody who's effectively trained and fought
: with three or four.

It works the same way in real-life. The way larger formations are managed is to break them down into pairs; a lead and a wingman. Each pair is assigned a task in the formation (or a position, if we're talking about aerobatics) and it's the lead who's responsible for getting that task done (or staying in that position) while it's the wingman's responsibility to follow his/her lead. In effect this cuts management tasks in half.

To break it into Halo terms, you'd have one pair of Banshees tasked with interception duties while a second pair was on the flag run.

  • The interceptor lead would engage threats (like enemy Banshees or LAAG 'Hogs) to the flag-run pair actively; his/her wingman would cover the lead's weak spots.

  • The flag-run lead would go after the flag, only engaging threats that directly prevent him/her from grabbing the flag; his/her wingman protects the lead's weak spots and comes to the lead's support when necessary.

That way you have a flight of four Banshees all working the same mission but not getting in each others' way. The interceptor pair can rove quite far from the flag-run pair while doing its task, but will still be supporting the flag-run pair by suppressing enemy interceptors and flak that could potentially interfere with the flag run.

(All of this is mercilessly borrowed from books by, and chats with, military pilots. I've never had the opportunity to try a planned four-ship Banshee sortie.)

: The issue even with two, of course, becomes learning not to get in the way of
: the other guy's Banshee or bullets, and there are some techniques,
: maneuvers, and methodologies to help this, but mostly it just comes down
: to fluidity, practicing together, and that same ability to
: "read" how another pilot is going to move.

Yeah, each pair needs to rehearse tactics together to make it work. This is only practical (if such a term applies!) for a clan meet with extensive practice. Voice communication would help coordination immensely.
