Well, this isn't a great example; in the case of state lotteries, your odds go down as more people buy tickets... but the pot gets bigger. Here, the pot is fixed (a helmet).

That said...

Bingo. You're not happy with the way the raffle's being run, don't participate. Geez. Bitching and moaning because you aren't getting as good a chance of receiving a $500 helmet for $5 as you'd like is just plain stupid.

Horrendous grammar aside, your chance of buying the object in question for $5 is ZERO. Your chance of winning the helmet if you buy one ticket is 1 in however many tickets are sold... which is absolutely, positively, greater than zero.

If you feel the odds are stacked against you, and you don't feel that you're given a good enough chance to win that helmet with your $5... don't buy a friggin' ticket.
