Except that Halo: First Strike, at least in the preview, seems to tell the story of the others, and the blurb on the Random House page suggests the squad may have some survivors, on top of the three SPARTAN II's who were too far away from Reach to join the mission. We never saw how that mission ended; given that it was one of the main shipyards for the UNS (p.138), I'd expect there'd be enough ships on the ground to give the SPARTAN II's a fighting chance at escape. We also never find out how John-117 gets back to Earth before Halo 2, and his Longsword interceptor is not noted in the novels to have Slipstream drivers... which means a rescue or rendevous with UNS forces, unless he manages to hijack a whole Covie cruiser by himself.

Also, if Linda was on the Pillar of Autumn in cryo, she's toast. :D

Anyways, there is the reference to 'a SPARTAN' in Halo 2, so there have to either be more of them around, or else their deaths were not reported to prevent panic. First Strike seems to suggest survivors, though.
