Re: Powers up the Ultimate Weapon™

In Response To: Re: Powers up the Trademarked Weapon™ (Mage)

The change in internal energy is equal to the work performed on the system plus the heat entering the system.

In this instance, the heat flow is zero (the Earth is an isolated body) so the change in internal energy is equal to the work performed. That work is equal to the mass moved time the distance moved. So all the energy is extracted from the motion of the rock due to gravity as it compresses. The act of pressure isn't creating the heat (in fact nothing is), the energy the rock releases as it falls towards the core is absorbed by the interior (or in any other instance of compression, the energy is extracted from whatever is performing the compression) and appears as heat.

When the process is reversed, the work performed by the object in expanding is radiated to the environment and the object cools.

So pressure doesn't create heat, it's a side effect of the insertion of heat into the object being compressed.

By the way, this is all from my thermodynamics textbook.
