Not having my astronomy textbook with me, I had to resort to an encyclopedia. To quote World Book: " The outer core begins about 1,800 miles below the earth's surface. Scientists believe the outer core is about 1,400 miles thick and is made of melted iron and nickel...The ball-shaped inner core lies within the outer core and makes up the center of the Earth...Scientists believe the inner core consists of solid iron and nickel." Okay, this encyclopedia is a few years old so some of the details might have changed, but the inner core is solid. It also rotates slightly faster than the rest of thea earth which causes all sorts of neat things like reversal of the magnetic poles, but that's not important right now. : ) - Bachus bachus@killerrobots.com |
