Actually, our inner core is *solid* because of pressure. Only the inner mantle and a bit of the outer core are liquid. And last I checked, the consensus was that most of the heat is due to radioactive decay; heavy uranium and whatnot sinks to the core and decays there. The heat produced by Earth's gravitational compression would have leaked away long ago. As I saidm
Surface tension? The lava would be bounded on one side by the solid inner surface of the Halo (where everything lives) and on the other by whatever the outside of the Halo is made of. I don't see where surface tension comes into it. You're probably right about a lava layer heating up the surface--I believe I mentioned that problem in my last post--but I feel like swiping your job as Devil's Advocate, so let's see...the distance between Earth's surface and the liquid region of the mantle is roughly 500 km, or a tenth of the Halo's radius. Is it possible that the Halo is 500 km thick? Based on what the hologram looks like, I think it is. And if Earth can have a temperature difference that great over 500 km, I don't see why the Halo can't. Ahh, I don't even think it's a real volcano anyway. --SiliconDream |
