Well, before we celebrate the apparent demise of 3rd person Halo, lets consider BOTH sides of the equation. If you want to judge 3rd person, don't play some 3rd rate game like Tomb Raider, try out something good, like mdk2, or Outcast. MDK2 is brilliant, but an entirely different scene than what Halo is trying to do. Outcast uses some elements in its universe that apply.
Outcast gave you the choice. First person worked well for sniping a specific target, but was cumbersome for the rest of the game. There was no question, it was much more satifying to watch Cutter run like hell from the aliens from a 3rd person point of view. This worked incredibly well in the context of the game for a number of reasons. One was auto-aim. It was only present in 3rd person mode, but it was there. It was not overwhelming, mainly taking care of the vertical, but gave you enough control to choose your targets. Of course, Outcast was an adventure game and not about combat. I would have no desire to play Outcast online, as i was saying "wow" at the graphics, more than focussing on the battle.
Halo is in a different position. i don't want to see auto-aim in single player if it can be avoided, mainly because it can't happen in multi-player. But I do want to see my marine run around and fire his weapon with all the fancy animation they have been hyping for the past year. 3rd person also gives you better interaction with outdoor terrain. it's easier to see beside you, and often gives you views first person wouldn't ie, if you are hiding behind a stump, you can still see around it in 3rd.

It all depends on the feel that Bungie wants to give this. if they want it to happen to YOU personally, first person is how it happens. If they want to give a beautiful movie that you control, 3rd is where it is at. In the end, gameplay is law, and whatever is the most FUN has to rule. I personally want to see 3rd person better than it has ever been done before, with 1st person sniping, like Outcast. No it won't be quake, or UT, but last I checked, I didn't buy those games.
