In Response To: Re: Compleate 'Early Conflicts' Text ([Tycho?])

:
: Some thoughts...

: "The ship's commander reports that an alien warship with powerful
: weaponry was present, and had decimated Harvest, exterminating the
: colonists (and presumably destroying the Argo). "

: I love the word presumably. I wonder what role the Argo will have in Halo? :P

: Ok, for this new info to fit into the marathon story line, some dates will
: have to be wrong. Why? I dont know. The marathon traveled through time, or
: earth changed its calander, or somthing.

Well, we already know the Marathon's AIs changed the calendar to fool the Pfhor. Perhaps to an unexpected extent.

: Possibility #1: The Marathon was launched before FTL drive was invented, the
: colony established and all that stuff with the Pfhor never going near
: earth because of the covenant. Durandal gives earth FTL drive- is masked
: as a human discovery to shield the public from the fact that a rampant AI
: of the marathon is cruising around in an alien ship after thier colony had
: been wiped out, with a moon sized ship captured by hostile aliens. Not the
: best PR ever.

You'd have to assume for this that the date of Durandal's return to Earth is also off-- by almost ten thousand years. And since that date occurs after the war with the Pfhor is over-- and presumably that with the Covenant as well-- there'd be little reason for anyone to fake that part of the chronology.

On the whole, unlikely.

: Possibility #2: The Marathon was launched well after the events in halo,
: after humanity some how lost the science, knowledge and technology of FTL
: drive- along with knowledge of the covenant. [unlikely in my opinion]

Agreed. Also unlikely.

: Possibility #3: The launch of the marathon is followed by the development of
: FTL drive, war with the covenant, and total destruction of earth colonies
: while marathon is still en-route to Tau Ceti. FTL ships dont visit
: marathon for reasons unknown.

It is possible to fudge some of the dates to make this likely. What makes it unlikely is the lack of mention of these events. Obviously you could explain away from a purely practical standpoint the fact that the events of Halo that overlap those in Marathon aren't mentioned in Marathon-- perhaps the ship didn't really have FTL communication. (From the creative perspective, of course, Halo wasn't imagined yet.)

What doesn't make any sense, of course, is the lack of mention of Marathon or the Pfhor at all in the existing Halo backstory. Since it was a major colonization effort, it would seem to be worth mentioning. The absence is conspicuous. Certainly, meshing the timelines would have been easy if they had intended to do it. Obviously Bungie has reason to do so-- either to ensure that Halo is viewed as distinct from Marathon, or simply to inspire Rampant discussion.
