Well, ok, a conspiracy theory: Bungie knows we are very persistent Bungie places 'fake' backstory in hidden webpage We go nuts on it Ok, that was completely insane... lets never mention it again. I kind of think it is a good thing that they're moving away from Marathon with Halo. Sure, it would be cool if they were in the same universe and all but there comes a time when you've sort of said everything you can say about a story and that's that. So this could be "Marathon revision 2", in which Bungie does it all over again (but different this time) :) Ok, ok, i do have something to add. The dates are very different than Marathon's, but the stories could still be connected. For example, Halo could take place after the universe had collapsed and reformed (explaining how Cortana could get stranded on the Halo, eh? Not to mention how she's "a friend of a friend" and "the angel beside the tomb" (Durandal's caregiver?) and explaining "there were four, but you couldn't have known" (Durandal, Tycho, Leela+ a fourth? Cortana?), explaining how she got stranded on a huge ring of uknown origin (which could very well be used to toss large objects out of our universe... something Durandal was keen on, unless i'm mistaken) which turns out to be Jjaro in origin, etc) or perhaps this is some sort of alternate universe. Though thse things require, as you put it, Jjaro magic. Just because some dates don't match doesn't mean the stories are different :) It's entirely possible that Bungie will link them in some obscure way no one but hardcore Marathon fans would notice- thus allowing Halo to exist without all that extra Marathon baggage. We'll see, we'll see... We'll see the tru7th... If this game ever gets released that is...
