No problem at all! This is how we figure things out.

Here's the first point: Sentience, as used as a determining factor for "cognitive ability," certainly is a requirement for the flood to spread. This I grant. But there may be some distinction between a member of a given species being a "potential vector" and just "food." For the flood to take control of a body and use it, that body has to have certain minimum requirements; humans and the covenant both fit into that nicely. What else might fit into this category?

Random Speculation: http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=81257
Might that have fit into things? Would have made this point more clear...but at any rate, that's not really the argument at hand.

The original post on this topic speculated that Halo only destroyed life of a particular biomass/intelligence level. This is what I disagree with. The line "But, once the others follow suit, this galaxy will be quite devoid of life, or at least any life with sufficient biomass to sustain the flood," spoken by GS, leads me to believe that Halo and its other installations will wipe out everything that the flood could possibly feed on or spead by taking control of (ignoring for the moment any possible distinction between the two). Guilty Spark's line indicates that Halo isn't too picky about what life it's wiping out, its (the Forerunner's) main concern being with not allowing the Flood to survive in any other (i.e., non-contained, non-controlled) environment.

: The easiest way to stop the flood is just to kill all the flood, & all
: infected beings. Halo doesn't do this. Why not? Here's where the personal
: beliefs & interpertation begin.

We'd like to belive that killing all the flood is possible, but Cortana says otherwise: "The only way to stop the flood is to starve them to death." Why can't you just kill all of the flood? More speculation to be had...
