I take a slight objection to this. I can certainly see it that way, but I think lumping the prologue with the "dream" levels is exclusionary. Frankly, I believe the nature of the story makes it impractical to clearly define the difference between dream and reality. Some levels seem much more surreal than others, but there is a gradient, and reality itself is shifting from one teleport to the next; so who's to say what separates real from fake levels?
All the analysis is great, but sometimes to me it feels as if we're trying to make the whole thing too literal, with less attention paid to metaphor or thematic concerns. It feels like we're trying to find out which part to believe, which seems to be against the spirit of the scenario.
I think the shamanistic tone of Greg K's message in the February 4th What's New illustrates this.
