I couldn't find anything on the Story site or in the Volunteer's posts about this. I think most people just overlooked the Manual text.
What this suggests is that that there were perhaps multiple 'failed' timelines before the events in Infinity.
However inconsistencies abound in the game that make it more difficult to understand the concept of multiple timelines, before and during Infinity. For example, not using a variation of Aye Mak Sicur for the first level - Ne Cede Malis ( I know Randy wanted to recreate the M1 look and feel, hence the completely new design for this failed ending level but it is out of character with the other failed ending levels). Numbering the Electric Sheep levels from 'one" when it would have been better to give them no numbers. Allowing the player to continue as if nothing happened after ending up on a failed version of Aye Mak Sicur. In other words it made no difference if you chose the wrong path on one of the 'dream levels'. Of course it was never possible to determine what was the right path on a 'dream level'. Was it just the first teleport terminal you came to? Did you have any free will in making that choice.? What made you choose the path to that teleport terminal? Was it the easiest route?
All of the above made it more difficult to understand what was actually happen during gameplay and turned a lot of people off Infinity. :(
