The Xbox did not do well outside of North America, but beyond Halo/2, there were many games for the system that sold it. It didn't receive as many of the big franchises as the PS2, because it was Microsoft's first console effort, but it had a lot of lesser-known gems.

Xbox also had Xbox Live, which was a big selling point. The PS2 didn't offer a very good online system, and the GC had only two online games. Furthermore, it had much more powerful graphics than the PS2, so a lot of the more graphically-intensive games went to the Xbox rather than the "kiddie" Gamecube or the weaker PS2. See: Morrowind.
