GC vs. PS2 vs. Xbox

Another reason the PS2 did really well is because it could play all the PS1 games. The PS1 trounced the N64 for various reasons and once the PS1 had market share everyone who owned a PS1 had plenty of reasons to upgrade to a PS2.

As for games, Nintendo played their cards wrong by keeping the N64 as a cartridge game. They lost a lot of good titles to Sony because of that. Square being a good example. Once studios were hooked up with Sony, they really had no good reason to move away from them.

The Xbox really did not do that well initially. The only game that anyone was particularly excited about was Halo. Halo basically kept the Xbox a viable machine until the major games came. Xbox Live and Halo 2 were the only other good reasons to get one (in my opinion). As far as I know, the only games that anyone ever talked about for the Xbox consoles were the Halo games. Everything else was cross-platform.

It was not until the Xbox 360 that the Xbox started gaining real market share. But both Xbox 360 and PS3 are getting destroyed by the Wii, so we shall see what happens.

All of that being said, the GC did have some awesome games. Most of the better titles came late and could be seen as childish by people who cannot have fun playing games in pastels. SSB: Melee was great, Mario Kart Double Dash was amazingly, Zelda games are generally a safe bet, and no other console has the platform games that Nintendo makes. The real hazard to the GC is that it just did not bring anything that the PS2 did not have or do better.
