There's also innovation in the mixing and integration of genres. Modern FPS's often include simplified elements of various vehicle sims, flying and driving and such (e.g. Halo); some mix adventure and role play elements in (e.g. Deus Ex); some even mix strategy/tactical elements in (e.g. Sacrifice). This was the main angle of innovation that we were doing for in Dynasty, for those who remember tht project; it was essentially a first-person shooter real-time tactical game, where you played a field commander responsible for ordering around a smallish military unit (in Myth-like fashion, select and click) while also having to watch your own butt and take advantage of terrain and vehicles to keep an eye on your troops and keep your own ass out of trouble. There were also a few "RPG"-like elements, about to the extent that there were in Pathways into Darkness at least. Man, now I'm sad again that that project died :-(
