In Response To: is the forum dying? (Nicholai) All good things come to an end. I'm not saying this forum is dead, but maybe, just maybe its slowly begining to degrade into that state.
And now, here we are, early 2007. thirteen years after the first Marathon was released, and twelve years since this community started. This forum has managed to congrugate (atleast to me) some of the greatest minds and a ton of smart people. People have managed to find Marathon's hidden undertones, managed to find references that were hidden, and even managed to go above and beyond and add onto the Marathon universe, and most of those scenarios have been great; some better than most modern story-telling FPS games out there. Is it possible that everyone has managed to uncover the mysteries, find the inconsistancies and fully understand the story? That at this point in time, Marathon is no longer the myserious monolith we hoped to decipher? That now the Marathon series is just an open book, that historians can look back on and understand what everything in the game means in just one sit down? Has everybody who has contributed to this page in the last twelve years, managed to make linearity out of Marathon's cryptic story, and possibly laid out the foundation for a potential Marathon text book, for Marathon to be taught in the public school system? Has it come to this? Or has the game just become boring because of its age, and that there is no longer any mystery to the dark corridors and swampy grounds that lurked there before, and now you can face the dangers with .10% less shock than last time you faced them. Because you know that the Pfhor Fighter you once feared is just a simple pixelated graphic with basic physics, programmed to begin moving once you're within the appropriate reaction range, and can easily be taken down with one or two fists, rather than the rounds you used to pump into it when you first began, worried about the fast moving red triangles on your HUD that will come and end your spree with just one swift move. Or maybe people have just begun to move beyond Marathon. Maybe there is a new game out there, somewhere, with as much, possibly even more depth than Marathon, and there are people out there now, putting as much dedication into the analysis of that game as people used to for Marathon when it was in it's infancy. But then again, theres also the possibility that people have deicded to move beyond Marathon. Having gotten tired with analyzing a thirteen year old game, they've moved onto creating some of their own stuff, unrelated with no attatchments to Marathon. If this is the case, we should salute these people, because we know what a great influence they might have had from Marathon, and can hopefully create something on par with Marathon, giving this new world something it has forgotten, the ability to have a simple, yet deep story. There is nothing wrong with Marathon, I am in no way saying that, but Marathon has managed to live past it's prime to today, and that is quite an accomplishment. Marathon is immortal To make hundreds, thousands of people onto a game and discuss it's story and everything in its entirety in such a serious manner, is something most games will always try to aspire to, and may never will. Marathon has had a great run, but maybe now, unaware of it, Marathon's fanbase is slowly dwindling away, into a tacit bliss, fading into the pages of history, with no negativity or anything, but finally, Marathon might be at peace. We can only hope for the best.
