Thanks again for the awesome feedback, this is great stuff. Should give me something to work on for a while.

The design concept was that playing the level the obvious way would take you down the "failure" branch... and then you've got to go back and figure out what non-obvious thing you overlooked on the branch level (which is the one you get sent back to) to get to the success branch. It's not supposed to be so much that "you" the player sitting at the keyboard have lost, so don't feel bad like you made a mistake; it's more that "you" the player-character made a wrong choice somewhere (as a plot element), and the failure branch is a look at what interesting developments follow from that wrong choice (Durandal's premature rise to godlike power in Ch1, Tycho's manacle conquest of the Pfhor armada in Ch2, etc), and thus an opportunity for you-at-the-keyboard to play a little sidetrack series of levels, and then go back and continue along the main series.

If the obvious way through each level took you down the success branch, most nobody would ever play the side ("failure") branches... and it seems to me it'd be even weirder if those players who wanted to go through and play the side ("failure") branches had to intentionally "lose" a level by avoiding the obvious path to victory in order to get here.

Think of in terms of a level design analogy... sometimes, a level's main, obvious way through is a big long loop which ultimately takes you back to the same X,Y location but at a higher elevation; but a very observant player would note the little elevator nearby that could spare them that loop. The elevator is a shortcut. But so long as the loop is pretty and fun to play, it's not exactly a punishment to take the long way around...
