Put yourself in Bungie's shoes. You've made a game (MI) that, by rights, was gibberish. Since then, people have spent 10 years (and money!) trying to understand it. Are you *really* going to go out and say "yeah, it was all gibberish!".
Of course you woudln't. You'd claim that it was complex and difficult to understand. Instead of dashing people's hopes, you've given them the impression that there is something deeper to understand. They'll buy the other games, etc.
Peter Molyknew (I know its spelled wrong) did the same thing before Fable: The Lost Chapters came out. "Nobody, to my knowledge, has found the secret quest found in the Guild!". Never mind that there wasn't a secret quest. People spent time looking for it.
I like Marathon. I have my own pet ideas on what happened in M:I. Does it matter? Not a damned bit. Every drop of concrete that composes the basement of my idea is based on what a guy thought would sound cool when he put it in the game.
