I have no idea if this is even possible, but have you looked at gmax? http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/ The system requirements only list Windows systems, but perhaps you have access to one or some OS options that runs Win9x stuff. (I've never used a Mac, so I'm shooting in the dark here.)
If nothing else, the price (free) is right... as is the 90+% compatability with 3DS Max.
