Even if MS Marathon was really bad, I'd probably play through it. It's easy to pick up an FPS and get into it, compared to something like Myth III.

So, play both, and talk and speculate about them on the same forum. Bungie Studios are technically the only ones with the rights to dictate official or canon Marathon material, but I can't think of a case where they would come into conflict in any way, or where there could be only one Marathon sequel. In what sense would I be giving one or the other "credit" or "faith"? I could say one was better than the other, but that goes for M1 vs M2 or Marathon vs Halo just as easily.

If you only have money for one, download the demo and then decide. If you want to write fanfic [?SP maps], base it on whichever has the most interesting story.

And it would be Marathon 3, not 4.
