Well then you're getting into the question as to whether the source of content has a valid claim to 'canon'. As Foborg pointed out, there is canon in the legal sense, but in general use wouldn't you think it's the fan base that dicatates what is valid and what is not? Microsoft could claim authenticity all they want, but if no one puts any credit into the claim, they've really got nothing at all.

That also gets into the question as to whether or not canon can be owned, and then in what sense or measure...
