In Response To: Hypothetical (Yossarian) : I just thought up a mediocre question and was wondering of what some of you
: Who controls Marathon canon? Is it Bungie, or the crew that worked at Bungie
: The following is purely hypothetical, so I don't want to hear any noise about
: Okay. Ahem. : What would you lend more credit to: 1. A Marathon 4 created by Bungie Studios
: OR, : 2. A Marathon TC created by Wideload, possibly *with* Jason and Robt and any
: Again, please don't remind me of how impossible this is, rather discuss to
: Otherwise keep on rocking.
I would like to crosspost something that we worked up after the Myth 3 canon debates over at the Asylum. These are the generally accepted "canon scales" we use for determining what information takes precedence over another, since Myth "canon" now contains so much contradictory information. For the purpose of these scales, "authors" means the PEOPLE who were involved with the writing of the story, or their agents, NOT the company whose name was on the original product. Category 1: "Canon" Subcategory A: "Release Materials"
Subcategory B: "Transrelease Materials"
Category 2: "Pseudocanon" Subcategory A: "Prerelease Materials"
Subcategory B: "Postrelease Materials"
Category 3: "Noncanon" Subcategory A: "Legal Canon"
Subcategory B: "De Facto Canon"
Within each of these categories, materials released later are considered "more canon", and within concurrent packaged materials (ie a game and it's manual) digital materials are considered "newer" than printed ones because they are easier to make last-minute changes in. So by these scales, a Marathon sequel (they'd have to go back and do Marathon 3 before they could do Marathon 4, mind) created by the original Bungie team who created the first games, even if they no longer worked at Bungie, would be more canon than something made by Bungie today, IF Jason and Rob weren't involved. Having the team split between the two makes it all kinda iffy now... but I think having some team members at the original company gets more cred than some team members at another company. That wasn't your question, though. So uh... to make sure your scantron gets this right: (2) :-) |
