Good points. I'm not very familiar with UT, but Deus Ex has an extremely involved plot and well-developed characters. It also has a more "human" element, that Marathon is unfortunately lacking (though probably due to technology limitations of the time). I also remember hearing from a friend that a lot of the people who made DX were Marathon fans, though unfortunately I can't confirm this. Like you said, Marathon was ahead of its time; sometimes this hurts a product's popularity, but that doesn't make it any less important. I think its safe to say that a lot of the truly innovative games of later, such as Deus Ex or, I suppose, Half-Life, would not exist or be as good if it hadn't been for Marathon.
And really, isn't it kind of fun to have a fanatical devotion to a game very few people have played or even heard of? I'd find this website much less interesting if there were a billion more just like it. It gives it a "cult movie" appeal.
