In Response To: Re: I was misunderstood, but... (Steve Levinson)

: Yikes, the gloves come off!

: Let's be clear - this is a place that welcomes all Marathon fans and that any
: contribution at all is welcome - provided the poster doesn't become a
: pest. SSO has initiated some truly worthwhile threads, including the one
: that lead Yos to write his now legendary Story Forum fan fiction piece.
: Simply being a fan is worthwhile - you don't have to be the designer of a
: great scenario or the one doing most of the open source work for AO.

: Now, as a fan there is still lot you can do to contribute. I'm not a scenario
: writer myself - I'm just a rabbid fan. What have I done - well if it's not
: already obvious, I'm one of the most fequent posters here with over 1k
: posts to the forum, making me the 4th most frequent poster of all time
: last time I checked. I would like to think that my comments have generally
: been constructive. I also put up an extensive Marathon Rubicon fan site,
: based on the volunteers series for that scenario, which I led. There is a
: lot you can contribute, SSO, and your presense here is worthwhile, but you
: can do more if you put your mind to it.

: Oh, and I strongly suggest you refrain from challenging anyone personally -
: you have only been here a short while and have no idea who some of the
: regular posters are or what they have done. Also, try not to take anyone's
: comments personally - that only leads to a flame war and they are usually
: meant in tongue and cheek. And to everyone else, let's refrain from
: getting personal.

(This is not directed at you Steve, just tagging this post to end of this thread)

When you witness fans of one game getting into a small scuffle over something as inconsequential as who has the bigger ePenis, is it any wonder really to see folks ignoring in a wide swath a game that is years old and was made for an already embattled platform? It's the same social mechanism at work.

I feel bad when I see that folks never had a chance to try the game, but I won't sit wondering 'why?' That's too obvious a question. Some things just are the way they are. Best to move forward then try to force folks to see things the way you see it.

Let me put it in this context: Let's say someone unearths a C64 or Atari 800 game that did everything that Marathon did... And even more astonishing, Jason Jones goes on record as saying that yes, he played that game when he was a youngster and he had always wanted to bring that experience to other players when he designed Marathon back in the early 90's. What do you honestly think the reaction on this board would be?
