I see your point, and it is good. I guess I had forgotten about the word atmosphere which rubicon strikes with its colors, perhaps it's this that scares me and forces me to dislike it, I don't know. I know I'm a bit unfare when I tell you about the colors, flow and more. It even sounds like im here to put you on place, but you must believe me, that's not my intention(and I'm not even capable of that anyway). I just want to share and discuss, nothing more.
In my opinion however, you took away not only the color in the texture sets but in the landscapes and alies too. The landscape and texture choice I have already gotten excellent explainations for, now I am interrested in the alines instead.

I can see you wanted to show that the pfhor had changed during the years that had passed, thus resulting in new armor that was easiest shown by getting them new colors on their outfits, but you did chose to go with dull colors here too, was that because you like those colors better, or because they fitted better to the textures, or perhaps something else?

I don't know how much you know about contrast, but anyway let me just say something about it. Contrast appears in three ways, light, hue and saturation.
(hue=color, saturation=colorness[how much grey that is put into the mix])
So you can get contrast by having dark or light colors, opposite colors or different tones of the colors.
Using contrast has great benefits as our eye notice strong differances, such as contrast, and put our focus on them. Let's say contrast creates interest. Lets put this knowledge into marathon. M1 for this instance, it had dull textures but the aliens were plenty colorful. Their color didn't make the contrast but the saturation of their colors. They were the stars in the dark night. Their color made us see them instantly, and not only that, as they are enemies they also screamed out to us here we come and you see it.

I wonder how rubicon would have looked if you had chosen to have colorful aliens and dull textures just as in M1.
