You hit the nail on the head, Goran. Most game players are dumb. That's why they like games like doom. Marathon is designed to be more than a first person shooter - it is a game in which the story and the action come together in a perfect synthesis that draws the player in, leaving them screaming for more. That is why Marathon has endured. Yet, I do conceed that this is different from exploration. Some players like myself like to explore and for us, Rubicon is a nearly perfect scenario. Others want the game spoon-fed to them. Not that they don't want to work in the game, but they want one way to go and a series of fights with little in the way of puzzles to solve. For many of us, this type of play is, well, boring. A good mapmaker balances these competing interests and provides a variety of map designs that cater to all interests without leaving the player lost, which is something no one wants. If you go back, map by map, and look at the original Marathon trilogy that Bungie created, I feel that there are more similarities in style with Rubicon than with any other 3rd party scenario. We've just all played the games so many times that we've forgotton those "where do I go next" moments. Personally, I never once got lots in playing Rubicon with the exception of Lutefisk - 'thoners aren't used to looking up. Frankly, I think that the biggest problem with people complaining of flow in Rubicon is that they don't take the time to read the terminals - try getting away with that in Marathon.

: Did you make the maps for you or for the people?

Funny, people have asked that same type of question of the members of the development team that built the first Mac ;^)
